Infrastructure Security

Security Starts With How the Infrastructure Is Built.

Firewalls and security products cannot compensate indefinitely for poor infrastructure design. Polar helps organisations design and review networks, cloud systems and infrastructure with sensible boundaries, controlled access and security considered from the beginning.

Security Is an Architecture Problem Too.

Infrastructure becomes difficult to secure when nobody has a clear picture of what's connected, which systems can communicate, who can access them, where the boundaries are, which services are exposed, how administrators and remote sites connect, and where workloads and data live. Before adding another security product, sometimes the more useful question is: does the infrastructure itself make sense?

What We Work On

Infrastructure Security, Designed In.

Network Segmentation

Designing network boundaries around users, devices, infrastructure and systems according to their actual communication requirements.

Firewall Architecture

Reviewing and designing how traffic moves between networks, locations and external services.

Secure Remote Access

Providing controlled routes into infrastructure for authorised users, administrators and technical teams.

Cloud Infrastructure Design

Considering network boundaries, access and exposure when designing hosted and cloud environments.

Management Networks

Separating and controlling access to infrastructure management interfaces where appropriate.

Infrastructure Review

Assessing existing network and infrastructure architecture to identify areas where design has become unnecessarily exposed, complicated or difficult to manage.

Trust Less by Default.

Traditional networks often assume that anything "inside" can be trusted. Modern organisations are more complicated — people work remotely, applications live in different places, cloud infrastructure talks to local systems, third parties need access, and connected devices appear in places they didn't before. Good infrastructure design reduces unnecessary trust and unnecessary connectivity: a system should be able to communicate with what it needs, not everything it happens to share a network with.

Security Without Destroying Usability.

A technically secure system that people cannot practically use creates its own problems. Infrastructure security needs to account for how the organisation actually operates — who needs access, from where, to what, how frequently, what needs to remain isolated, and what happens when something fails. The goal is infrastructure that is both controlled and operable.

Specialist Environments Need Different Boundaries.

This becomes particularly important where the network contains more than ordinary employee devices — laboratory equipment, research systems, servers, development infrastructure, cameras, operational technology, connected devices, AI infrastructure and remote facilities. These systems may have very different requirements and shouldn't automatically be treated as equivalent network participants. Explore Research Environments → · Explore AI Infrastructure →

Start With the Architecture.

If you're unsure whether your existing infrastructure provides the boundaries and controls your organisation now needs, we can start with a technical review — understand what exists, understand what needs access, identify unnecessary exposure or complexity, then decide what actually needs changing.
